Our goal is to make sure our authors have the best experience and navigating through the self-publishing process alone can be daunting. Whether you are just self-publishing with IngramSpark or also working with KDP, there are strategies to consider that will help to avoid wasting time, money, and assets.
Here are some things to consider when publishing your book.
Unless there are some unique reasons, it’s not in your best interest to publish your book after November. It’s best to wait until the new year when you have the advantage of an advanced publishing date. The lure of potential holiday sales should be offset by this strategy. Once you publish your book the hourglass is turned over. The best strategy is having an advanced pub date allowing you to focus on building marketing momentum.
As tempting as it is to get a free ISBN from IngramSpark or KDP, if you do so, you won’t be able to self-publish with both companies and get the benefits that come with doing this. You are better off owning your ISBNs. Go to Bowker- Identifier Services and get your own ISBNs for each version of your book.
Once you are done with the design phase and ready to upload your book, IngramSpark offers a discount for setting up your book and eBook at the same time. If you do this, you MUST have all your files ready or you won’t be able to continue the setup process. If you find yourself in this position, you will need to write in to support and ask them to reset the setup allowing you to upload each version separately.
Make sure you understand the entire process first and work backward. Ask yourself; When do you want to publish the book? What are your costs and royalties that might affect the page count? Are you budgeting for marketing and promotions? What are your costs for editing, cover design, and interior design? Knowledge is power and allows you to plan properly.
